Origin
Ice Hockey originated in Europe and first started out as field hockey. When the ponds froze over, the men played on ice, using rocks as pucks. Ice hockey first came to North America in the 1800s. It was first in Canada and then moved down to the United States. Each team used play with nine players at a time, then it moved to seven, and again shortened down to five per side. The National Hockey League, the most popular league in the world, first started in 1917, when the first game was played. The five original teams included Toronto Areans, Quebec Bulldogs, Ottawa Senators, Montreal Wanderers, and the Montreal Canadiens. In the 1930's, there were only six teams left which became to be the "Original Six." These teams included the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, and the Chicago Blackhawks.
